Syrinx are delighted that the Melville Beach Road Bioengineering Project has been recognised at the 2025 WA Coastal Awards for Excellence in the Coastal Planning and Design category.
Syrinx are proud to have led the design of this 500m stretch of foreshore restoration along the Swan River. Syrinx’s design balanced the site’s high recreational use with its environmental sensitivity, responding to challenging conditions including exposure to south-westerly winds, erosion, and the need for safe public access.
The Syrinx design incorporated innovative bioengineering techniques, predominantly brush log walls, stabilising the foreshore while supporting natural sediment processes and native vegetation establishment. The design was also informed by the community and has provided improved access and amenity through universal access ramps and limestone stairs as formalised beach entry points, providing a more resilient and inclusive public foreshore.
This award celebrates the success of sustainable design that uses natural materials, adaptive design, and community input to deliver measurable outcomes for both people and nature.
Syrinx is proud to continue leading in nature-based coastal design that restores, protects, and connects our coasts for the future.
